Pope Benedict XVI

The crowd in St. Peter's Square rejoiced as Pope Benedict XVI (formerly Cardinal Ratzinger) was announced as the new pontiff!

If you need a primer on the "Panzer Cardinal," see the Wikipedia.

And I don't know what to think. I was expecting a Pope from the 3rd world, but at the end of the day, picking a Pope because of nationality is a pretty petty thing to do.

This is a pretty challenging and exciting time for the Church, let's just pray Pope Benedict XVI can follow in the footsteps of St. Peter and John Paul the Great!

I'm quite surprised that they chose him at the age of 78 -- up until a few days ago, it seemed that a younger pope was more likely.

Which Benedict do you think inspired his choice of name? I was kind of thinking the name chosen would be Leo. I am not surprised that the new pope did not select John, Paul, or John Paul.

This is a great day.

How can you all be so optimistic. I mean I do honour the catholic church and the pontificat but Kardinal Ratzinger is a very conservative minded person. There is great danger that he will go on with the policies that John Paul II. practiced. The catholic church needs dialogue with other religions (especially Islam) and women (most importantly), left alone the role of gay people (yes, they do exist).

Let us all pray that this new pope at least does not pray in Africa not to use condoms. Let those people have more chances in life than being born with HIV, educate them in the way we are educated (A condom is the only chance of not getting HIV).

Hi -
As a member of the Russian Orthodox Catholic Church (a/k/a/ the Orthodox Church in America, but don’t ask America’s Greek, Serbian, Macedonian or Albanian Orthodox for an endorsement of this claim!) I was thrilled when, 41 years ago, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople, lifted the mutual excommunications of each other’s followers, and I trust that by now I would be welcomed to receive the Eucharist from any Roman Catholic church. I haven’t yet attempted to do so, not knowing if news of that four-decade old reversal has become common knowledge of all parish priests. Has it?

I am of overwhelming German descent; how the son of a Prussian (my grandfather) became Orthodox Catholic has something to do with the place of his birth: Bytla, Ukraine; how I, the son of a Pennsylvania German father, became an Orthodox Catholic has much to do with the place of my mother’s birth, which was in the same village. With this pedigree, I doubt Pope Benedict XVI would be unsympathetic.

Dr. John S. Sultzbaugh (a/k/a “Sulzbach”)

PS:

Just today I heard the entire formula which was applied to the announcement of Pope Benedict XVI’s election us the entire site which quotes the entire announcement (“Dear Brothers and Sisters …”)?

I'm happy too! Wikipedia crew is really fast!!! BTW I don't think "the end justify the means" too.
We just have to pray for a good Pope.
